Weekly Highlights
Too much happened this week to dedicate the opening to a single topic, so I'm jumping straight into the highlights – but not before mentioning Discord's recent decision to delay age verification checks and this Uranus joke that made me giggle.
In this week's activity:
- OpenDroneLog, a new drone flight logging app, received a cease and desist letter after developing a tool that allows users to easily download data in bulk from a third-party platform. The company eventually withdrew their complaint and released their own tool in response to the backlash.
- A Redditor exposed a serious vulnerability in the codebase of Huntarr, a new-ish and vibe-coded *arr consolidation app. In response, the developer nuked their entire presence from the internet (although I think I may have found them).
- OpenClaw wiped the e-mail inbox of Meta's Director of Superintelligence despite repeatedly being told not to
- LibreOffice (desktop-based Office alternative) announced they're reviving the web-based version of their productivity suite
- The task management platform Vikunja recently released v1.0 after years of development – and then did a speedrun straight to v2.0 this week to address some critical vulnerabilities
- Although I'm almost certain I've covered this before, Ente, a self-hosted photo platform, (re)launched Locker – a privacy-focused mobile app for storing sensitive files
- ErsatzTV, a platform for transforming media libraries into custom live TV channels, said goodbye this week as the repo was officially archived on GitHub
- A random person in my Mastodon feed developed NearbyGlasses, a privacy-focused Android app for detecting and alerting users of nearby smart glasses using Bluetooth company identifiers
- Samsung announced they're expanding Galaxy AI via an integration with Perplexity, which will confusingly rely on the wake phrase "Hey, Plex" for voice-based access (Plex lawsuit incoming?)
- Someone dropped a slick new Gmail theme for Roundcube
- Hetzner announced a 37% price increase for new and existing VPS customers beginning April 1
- Firefox 148 released with an AI kill switch to easily disable all AI browser features
- Anthropic pulled a Google and dropped the central pledge of their flagship safety policy
- A curious Hacker News reader did the math and discovered that new accounts are 10x more likely to use em dashes – a symbol that has recently become associated with content generated by AI
