Weekly Highlights
It's been a spicy week in self-hosting.
To kick things off, a Plex employee was caught leaving fake reviews of the platform's redesigned mobile app (the launch of which has been a disaster) on the Google Play Store. Plex has yet to provide a formal response, but bonus points to Redditor u/Teppiest for archiving the thread before moderators locked it and began deleting comments.
On a separate front, Nextcloud created a bit of a stir in a blog post accusing Google of gatekeeping behavior after they rejected an update and limited the platform's ability to upload files from user devices in November 2024. After several major outlets picked up the story, Google quickly reached out to the team and offered to restore the app's permissions, which is now being rolled out to users.
In self-host-adjacent controversies, the popular media tracking platform Trakt is under fire for doubling the cost of its annual subscriptions and VPN provider VPNSecure took some heat after cancelling lifetime subscriptions for long-standing customers.
On a more positive note:
- The Glance dashboard project released a huge update featuring authentication and a ton of other enhancements. The team is also looking for community feedback via a survey that takes only a few minutes to complete.
- The team behind Pangolin – a relatively new and popular tunneling project – quickly (and gracefully) pivoted after receiving user feedback for locking features behind the enterprise version of their software
- A selfh.st reader recently reached out and shared a Raycast extension they've developed for selfh.st/icons (thanks for the contribution!)
Happy selfh.st/ing!
