Introducing selfh.st/companions, a Directory of Companion Apps for Self-Hosted Software
Update: The companions directory has now been merged with selfh.st/apps and can be browsed using the switch at the top of the page.

Today – just a few weeks after launching selfh.st/apps – I'm excited to publish a related project I'm calling selfh.st/companions, a directory of companion applications for self-hosted software:

Companion Apps for Self-Hosted Software
A directory of companion applications for self-hosted software curated for easy browsing and discovery

Similar to selfh.st/apps, the directory covers a wide range of applications (open and closed source) and features filters for self-hosted software and available platforms. However, the criteria for appearing in the new directory differs slightly:

For example, the browser extension for saving bookmarks to Linkding would be considered a companion app as it extends Linkding's functionality but isn't required to use the core service. The mobile apps for Bitwarden or Nextcloud would not be considered companion apps as they're a core part of the original projects and required for intended functionality.

While this does sometimes create a bit of a gray area, the ultimate goal of the project is to help users discover new companion applications they wouldn't normally have come across when deploying a self-hosted project.

Additional details and anticipated questions about the list can be found here. As usual, feel free to reach out if you'd like to connect about any aspect of this project.

Thanks, and happy selfh.st/ing!
