I've spent more time than I care to admit brainstorming ways to monetize the content I curate across Self-Host Weekly, selfh.st/apps, and selfh.st/icons. To be frank, the difficulty has always been finding ways to incentivize contributions while ensuring the content itself remains free and accessible (in the spirit of FOSS).
Today, I'm launching some subscriber-specific features that I believe are value-added propositions that will still allow non-subscribers to enjoy and benefit from my content.
Readers can now sign up for one of three subscription tiers ($5, $7, or $10/month) and gain access to the following perks based on the selected tier:
- Full-Text Newsletter RSS Feed (Level 1): The full content of each week's newsletter via a unique RSS URL
- Custom Color Icons (Level 1): Custom links to icons that can be colorized via user-specified hex color codes using my infrastructure (no need to self-host)
There are also a few perks in the works (heh) that will be released in the coming weeks:
- Cloud save/sync for selfh.st/apps bookmarks (Level 2)
- Access to my master RSS software release feed used to compile the software activity in the weekly newsletter (Level 3)
Further details on how to take advantage of the various perks can be found below:

Thanks to all readers โ members and non-members alike โ for the support that makes selfh.st possible!
Happy selfh.st/ing!
